IN MEMORIAM

MINUTES OF 2010 AGM

Approved. Proposed: Bill Higginbottom. Seconded: Tony Richardson.

MATTERS ARISING

None.

TREASURER'S REPORT

Treasurer Ian Webster's report covered the period 1st December 2009 to September 2010, so did not include revenue from a Bonfire or Sportsman's Dinner. Overall the club's level of debt remains similar to that of last year, as predicted. Ian noted that the apparently insignificant profit from the Village Fun Day was due to accounting anomalies, whereby remaining drink and the "float" had not been allowed for in the figures; in fact the event raised a profit of around £600. Income had been affected by a lack of fundraising events and a fall in sponsorship. Investment in the pavilion was reflected by healthy income from bookings. Ian noted many new Membership Plus members, but noted that many former members had not renewed. He acknowledged a significant donation from the estate of the late Ron Heron.

Approved. Proposed: Bill Higginbottom. Seconded: Tony Richardson

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT

Chairman Ed Yardley reflected on a year of consolidation, his first in office. The current level of debt reported by the Treasurer was not unusual and to be expected at this time in the seasonal cycle. He suggested that a difficult financial climate dictates prudence, so the Club has not spent as much on ground maintenance as it otherwise might have.

Turning to fund-raising, the Village Fun Day had again been a success, and the Club intended to repeat the event in 2011 with a higher profile. Selling Christmas raffle tickets on the gate at the Bonfire in lieu of donations had been a profitable initiative, leading to significantly higher ticket income than in previous years. The Sportsman's Dinner was again successful and enjoyable.

On the pitch, the 1st XI's return of seven wins, nine defeats and six matches abandoned was disappointing. The 2nd XI, having feared relegation at one stage, actually finished in 6th place in the league, with a record of 9 wins, 9 defeats and 4 games abandoned. Ed noted that Hayfield old boy Matt Higginbottom had represented Derbyshire versus the Australian touring side.

Communication: Ed observed that the abortive and inquorate AGM in November may have been a blessing in disguise as it led to the establishment of a common membership database, and tonight's reorganised AGM had been better publicised. He thanked the membership for their attendance and stressed that communication was two-way: the committee welcomes representations from the membership. He noted that other channels of communication, such as between selectors and captains, could be improved.

Ed announced the institution of two new playing awards, to acknowledge the Best Bowler and Best Batsman, the former in memory of Ron Heron and the latter funded from the Peter Allen Fund. Christian South suggested that these awards should be voted for by the players, a suggestion that was met with general agreement. Dave Higginbottom proposed a similar award for Fielding. On the subject of awards, Simon Waddington mentioned a trophy provided by his late father for the batman scoring the most sixes in the season. Geoff Hudson believed he had the trophy in his possession and Ed proposed the award be reinstated in future seasons.

Ed asked for more commitment from players, especially more assistance for the captains and in supporting fund-raising and ground-preparation initiatives.

In conclusion he paid tribute to the efforts of the Management Committee, the two senior Captains, and to Bill Higginbottom for another season of "hard graft". He commended Paul Coverley's contribution as "much more than just chief sponsor" and thanked Mike Blake for his valued assistance with the club website, which he urged members to use. Tom Miller's efforts on behalf of the Juniors were described as "fantastic" and Dave Aldridge was thanked for his unbiased and engaging match reports. Finally, Ed noted the financial contribution from teas, which this year amounted to £749.

1st XI

In Tom Jarvis's absence, his 1st XI report was presented by the Secretary:

"The season started in difficult fashion with several key members of the previous season's team either retired, injured or leaving for other clubs. We were also without one or two of the youngsters for the first few weeks due to University commitments. It was obvious that we would not be able to challenge for honours as we had in recent years. However, I do believe we should have finished in a much healthier position than we did.

Sadly, at times, the attitude was poor. Whilst we seemed to compete against teams at the top end of the table – beating the eventual champions Hawk Green and comfortably winning away to the old enemy, Compstall – performances against the lesser lights of the league were disappointing. Whereas in previous seasons we had brushed aside teams like Chapel and Hadfield with relative ease, this season an arrogant attitude crept in and very few within the side were prepared to knuckle down and graft for a result, preferring to throw their wickets away and get to the pub. Results against our fellow relegation contenders were not good.

We fared no better in the cup. The performance away to Whaley Bridge was perhaps the worst I had experienced in 20 years of playing for the first XI.

Toward the end of the season, availability became an issue and on one occasion we took the field with only ten men. Others had to come out of retirement to assist and I was grateful to those who did. Frustratingly, as captain, players would arrive late to games both home and away, on occasions arriving at the ground eating lunch whilst the rest of the team were taking the field. This attitude will have to change dramatically if we are to survive next season.

It was not all doom and gloom. Shane Furness had an excellent season with the bat. Dave Higginbottom contributed well with the ball when his dodgy back allowed him. I would also like to thank Dave Aldridge who played every game, performed well with the bat in the first half of the season and bowled consistently throughout when called upon. His attitude is an example that others should follow.

Due to a longstanding ankle injury, my playing days are now numbered. I’d like to wish the best of luck to whoever takes over as skipper next season as it will undoubtedly be a tough task."

2nd XI

Christian South reported:

"This year has been a difficult one all round, starting with so many important players from last season leaving for various reasons. We have rarely had a full-strength side and in some cases a full 11 players, and some performances have reflected this. There have, however, been a few exceptions to this, especially the win at Dinting at home when we chased down 360 with G Wood hitting a brilliant 160 not out, the wins away at Buxton and away at Birch Vale, both times after struggling to field a team, and, more enjoyably, the win on the last day of the season over Birch which kept us up and denied Birch the chance to win the league.

As I mentioned, G Woods' 160 not out was probably the best batting performance of the season for us, but a few other mentions are needed. Ben Adamson came back to play his first full season in years, and started remarkably with the bat until an unfortunate eye injury halted him, so we just hope Ben will be OK for the future. Jim Adamson arrived back from Oz and picked up from the previous season and ended up as our leading wicket-taker, With the lack of senior players available this season, a lot of juniors have been thrown in and all performed, especially Matt Proctor with the ball and occasionally with the bat, and big things will be expected of him in the coming season.

Regrettably, for various reasons I will not be putting myself forward to captain the side again next year but will fully support the new skipper. I think that next year the players and club as a whole need to be realistic as to what we can achieve. As all clubs do, we are going through a transitional period and helping bring through the next crop of juniors needs to be high on the list of priorities. But, as I have experienced this year, the more experienced members of the club still have a massive role in doing this and the juniors need to take all the praise as well as criticism on board in a positive manner, as in the end these comments are there to help you learn and improve."

Christian ended by stating that those expressing grievances amongst themselves had little right to complain unless they contributed to the running of the club themselves and put forward their criticisms openly and constructively.

WOMEN’S SECTION

Lorna Young presented the following report:

"We have had some great training seasons through the season from Sally Green the DCB Coach. There are still very few teams in the Women's League, but we managed to play 4 Derbyshire Sunday League matches, winning 1 and losing 3. A friendly was played with the North East Visually Impaired Men's Cricket Team, an excellent game, very close, and won by them by 11 runs – a rematch is definitely planned. The team also donated £50 to Hayfield Cricket Club.

We organised a fun Women's Pub Cricket event in June, which was as usual very eventful. Thankfully the weather was slightly kinder to us this year!

The junior Hayfield Girls had a very successful year at county standard. Katie Davies played for the Girls U15 and the Derbyshire Ladies 1st XI. For the U15s her bowling and batting stats gave her a place in the top 10 of the under-15 girls in the country, claiming 10% of the team's wickets through the season. Abbie Ward made her first appearance in the U13 Derbyshire Girls team, who won the East Midlands League. Isobel, who is 11, was invited to train with the Derbyshire Girls and has continued to do so this season. Unfortunately, Derbyshire did not have an under-16 Girls team so although Emily Jennison continued her training, she was unable to play any matches. This year, all four girls are again travelling once a week to County Training in Derbyshire, with Emily going twice a week for fast-bowling sessions.

The team is unlikely to take part in the league next season, instead planning to join forces with some of the other local cricket teams to try to play some friendlies and to encourage more junior girls to play women's cricket in the High Peak."

AWARDS

The Ian Woods Trophy for the Best Individual Performance of the Year went to George Wood for his innings of 164 against Dinting.

The Sportsman of the Year Award was awarded to Phil Hopwood for his all-round contribution to pavilion and ground maintenance and fund-raising.

The Under-16 Player of the Year and the Ian Simpson Outstanding Junior Player of the Year Awards were awarded to Matt Proctor.
